Hicham Benohoud is a photographer whose innovative practice blends elements of painting and performance to explore identity politics and power relations. Frequently incorporating his own body as a subject, his practice is characterised by staged and constructed imagery, in which everyday objects are transformed into unsettling, thought-provoking compositions.
Benohoud is a graduate of the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg (1987). His work has been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Aperture Foundation, New York; Tate Modern, London; and the Hayward Gallery, London. Benohoud has received numerous accolades, including Prix Photo Service Prize in Arles and the Prix Visa pour la Création, awarded by Cultures France. In 2025, his book The Classroom, published by Loose Joints, was selected as the PhotoBook of the Year for the Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards.
